The Modern Struggle. The DadBod/MomBod & How to be your Fittest after 35.

ree

The modern world steers us away from the natural way we are supposed to live. We eat fake foods cooked in microwaves and we are attached to our phones 24/7/365. Sitting at desks all day inside working jobs we hate.We live in these sterile safe spaces. We have become anxious and depressed creatures living in abundance yet craving that next "thing". The modern world has made it very hard to stay fit and healthy. It has led to the prevalence of the so called DadBod and MomBod. The normalization of this is concerning to say the least. So what can be done??? Can we fix this problem? What will it take? Are our best days behind us or do they possibly still lay ahead of us?

Lets start with a question. Who wants to be a jacked, healthy and fit 75 year old turning heads at the local grocery store? Who wants to stand our from the HERD?

If your still reading hopefully you answered yes to the previous questions. Its a serious one, we are made for more than what this modern world has led us to believe. We are going to live the majority of our lives older than 35 years old, the importance of the care we take of ourselves is literally vital to our success. So with that being said lets dive in.

It hits like an uppercut from Mike Tyson one day you wake up and your 35, 40,45, 50+ years old and your body just doesn't feel like it used to ( THIS IS NORMAL?). Your joints ache and creek, your back is on fire, you look in the mirror and your gut hangs out more than it used to and its a major victory just to put on your socks in the morning. Your daily life and responsibilities are much different than they used to be. As we know as we age our responsibilities start adding up real quick. Leaving us stressed to the gills about bills, kids, work, family and health concerns. Just to name a few. It can get overwhelming at times. I totally get it. These added responsibilities that we didn't have 5,10,15, 20 years ago can take a toll on our fitness level, overall health and aesthetics. This toll can lead us down a slippery slope towards decay and sickness if we are not aware of our habits. One week off from our training and diet can turn into a month off and then 5 years off in what seems to be the blink of an eye. We will dive into these areas more later on but first lets talk about the major thing a lot of us miss right here. When it comes to these added responsibilities and lifestyle changes we are forgetting one main thing. YOUR HEALTH AND FITNESS IS YOUR TOP RESPONSIBILITY. If we neglect this then we cannot serve others. Bottom Line. Its the most important and valuable thing in the world.

So we have to ask ourselves, what can we control to regain our fitness and functionality like when we were 25 or 30 years old again. is it even possible? Am I too far gone?

Our Modern Worlds lifestyle issues from our jobs to our overall lifestyle can wreck havoc on our health.

  • Our Jobs leave most of us inside all day sitting at a desk, the state of modern work can and usually does negatively impact our bodies, bellies and minds. Being that most modern work is sedentary this can leave us prey to more sitting, less sun, less movement and eating the wrong foods.

  • Responsibilities: Bills, Kids, Mortgages, Stress, Families, Commuting. All these plus many more I missed leads to one major problem in our lives we face. And that is the priority for putting our health and fitness first. And that gap that is created from our jobs, responsibilities and lifestyle is "not having enough time." At this point you may be saying yes, exactly. I have no time. Or i get home and I am just beat from the day. I completely understand and have been there myself. And this the lack of time excuse adds up over the years to less movement and eating less quality food which equals a lower standard for our personal health and fitness.

The lack of time excuses is not a favorite of mine. At the end of the day we can make time for things that matter to us. And what could possibly matter more than your health? The inverse of this is that "not having time" now may actually end up giving us a lot less time on the back 9 of life. Its funny how once we encounter a health problem everything else in our lives cease to matter much. Hell I have clients that train at 5am or 9pm because its important and part of their daily habit to keep themselves healthy and fit for themselves and their families. Not to mention the amazing examples this sets for our kids and others around us.

So you are not alone in this struggle , you are not broken, your best days can still be in front of you when it comes to your health and fitness. And here is how we get there!!

The Fix. The Roadmap to get back or to get to even higher heights of health and fitness. We can focus on only what we can control. And as per the tweet breakdown above this falls into 3 categories. Habits, Nutrition and Training, and thats the order of importance.

Habits: Easy on paper, takes some effort in real life. But hell if it was easy everyone would do it. And if you have read this far you are not just anyone or an average Joe. The top daily habits that will make a difference are:

  • Quality Sleep for 8 hours a night

  • Cook all/most of your meals at home

  • No blue light when its dark outside

  • Spend time outside, get sun on your body

Nutrition: Like the old saying goes you can our train a bad diet, and nowadays food quality is vital.

  • Eat 150 grams of protein per lbs of bodyweight for guys and 100g for women

  • Eat real foods ( meat, fruits, eggs, raw dairy, some veggies,(carrots, blueberries), potatoes, rice)

  • Drink 64oz of H2O a day, from a glass container, I like the brand Mountain Valley Water best

  • Meal prep, bring lunch to work. Planning ahead is of massive importance here. My go to right now is grass fed sirloin tips and pineapple

  • No alcohol or limit to special occasions

Training: The stronger you are makes life better. Plus lifting weights will turn you into a fat burning machine.

  • Lift 4x per week ( having a home gym is a huge life hack)keep session at 45mins-1hour

  • 2 30 minute walks outside a day ( no matter the weather)

  • Progressive overload your training ( we must train with intention)

  • 15 mins of Daily mobility or Yoga, keeping our bodies limber and structurally balanced will pay off big time as we age

  • Sign up for a challenge so you have something to train for, this ads and intrinsic value to your training and will keep our motivation up.

This is the magic pill. Its not rocket science its just about building your habits and discipline behind this and putting it into action daily.

Only 3% of adult Americans strength trains 2x per week for at least 30 minutes. That means 97% DO NOT. Standing out from the HERD has never been easier. I believe that you can do this. 6 months of this and your life will change forever. We are made for more, go get it!!!
